Forex Market Today: US CPI Takes Center Stage as Dollar Eases, Gold Tests $4,150 and Oil Keeps Inflation Risk High

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 | Forex, Gold, Oil, Bitcoin & Global Markets

US inflation takes center stage today.

The September Consumer Price Index will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET, and it could become the most important market-moving event of the week.

The challenge for traders is that today’s report is unlikely to be as simple as asking whether inflation rises or falls.

Headline CPI is expected to accelerate sharply because energy prices have risen.

But monthly core inflation, which removes food and energy, is expected to slow.

That means the real market question is not simply, “Is CPI hot?” It is whether higher energy costs are spreading into the underlying inflation components watched closely by the Federal Reserve.

The Dollar Index begins the session near 102.1–102.2 after pulling back from Monday’s 18-month high near 102.6.

Gold is under pressure around the $4,150–$4,160 region, while Oil has climbed toward $95 and Bitcoin is attempting to stabilize above $83,000.

💭 QUESTION OF THE DAY

Will today’s CPI show that inflation is spreading beyond energy — or will softer core inflation reduce the urgency for another Fed rate hike?

⚡ CPI Quick Answer

Today’s headline CPI number may look hot even if it arrives exactly at expectations.

A 0.6% monthly headline increase and 3.6% annual inflation are already largely anticipated.

The more important surprise could therefore come from core CPI.

A core monthly reading above 0.2% would strengthen concerns that inflation is broadening beyond energy. A softer core reading could reduce some of the pressure on the Fed even if headline inflation remains elevated.

🔥 US CPI Today: What Traders Need to Know

The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases September CPI today at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The market enters the report expecting a significant rise in headline inflation.

📊 September CPI Forecast

Inflation MeasureForecastPrevious
Headline CPI MoM0.6%0.4%
Headline CPI YoY3.6%3.4%
Core CPI MoM0.2%0.3%
Core CPI YoY2.5%2.4%

What Exactly Is CPI?

The Consumer Price Index measures changes in the prices consumers pay for a basket of goods and services.

That includes areas such as housing, food, transportation, medical care, clothing, recreation and energy.

Markets normally focus on two versions.

Headline CPI

Includes the full consumer basket, including food and energy. It reflects the inflation households experience directly, but it can move sharply when Oil, gasoline or food prices change.

Core CPI

Removes food and energy. Because those categories are volatile, core CPI can provide a cleaner view of persistent underlying inflation.

Why Headline CPI Could Be Misleading Today

A 0.6% monthly headline CPI increase would normally look extremely strong.

But markets already expect much of that increase to come from energy.

Oil prices remained elevated through September and have continued rising into October.

That means today’s CPI report is partly a test of whether the energy shock is staying inside the energy category.

The Important CPI Question

Is expensive energy simply raising gasoline and transportation costs — or is it beginning to lift services, goods, wages and broader consumer prices?

Why Core CPI May Matter More Than the Headline

The market already knows headline inflation is likely to accelerate.

That makes the core monthly reading especially important.

The consensus is approximately 0.2%.

A reading of 0.2% would suggest underlying monthly inflation remains relatively controlled despite the energy shock.

But a move to 0.3% or higher would immediately create a more uncomfortable picture for the Fed.

🎯 The Number I Would Watch First

Core CPI MoM.

If headline CPI prints around 0.6% but core remains at 0.2%, markets may conclude that much of the inflation acceleration remains energy-driven. But if core also accelerates, the reaction in yields and the Dollar could become much more aggressive.

Why CPI Matters So Much for the Federal Reserve

The Fed raised its benchmark policy rate by 25 basis points in September to 3.75%–4.00%.

The central bank is now trying to balance two very different risks.

Risk One: Inflation Is Still Too High

Headline inflation was already 3.4% in August and is expected to rise further in September. Higher energy prices also threaten to keep household inflation expectations elevated.

Risk Two: The Labour Market Is Weakening

September nonfarm payrolls increased by only 29,000.

The unemployment rate remained at 4.2%, creating a difficult environment for policymakers considering additional tightening.

New York Fed President John Williams said Tuesday that another rate increase may still be appropriate this year, but that he currently sees no obvious need for additional tightening in 2027.

That makes today’s CPI particularly important for the December rate-hike debate.

Three CPI Scenarios Every Trader Should Prepare For

🔴 Scenario 1: Headline AND Core CPI Beat Forecasts

This would be the most hawkish scenario.

For example, headline CPI above 0.6% combined with core CPI at 0.3% or higher would suggest inflation is not simply an energy story.

  • DXY: Potential move toward 102.60 and 103.00
  • US yields: Likely higher
  • Gold: Initial downside risk toward $4,100
  • EUR/USD: Downside pressure
  • USD/JPY: Potential push toward 159
  • Bitcoin: Could come under renewed pressure
  • NASDAQ: Vulnerable to higher yields

🟡 Scenario 2: Headline Hot but Core Around 0.2%

This is close to what markets currently expect.

Headline inflation could climb to 3.6% because of energy while monthly core inflation slows.

This could produce an extremely volatile first reaction.

Dollar traders may initially respond to the hot headline before focusing on the softer underlying number.

This is the scenario with perhaps the greatest risk of an 8:30 a.m. whipsaw.

🟢 Scenario 3: CPI Comes in Softer Than Expected

A softer headline combined with core CPI below 0.2% would challenge expectations for additional tightening.

  • DXY: Potential downside toward 102.00 and 101.80
  • Treasury yields: Could fall
  • Gold: Potential recovery through $4,200
  • EUR/USD: Potential move higher
  • GBP/USD: Could break above its recent range
  • Bitcoin: Could benefit from easier financial conditions
  • Stocks: Lower yields may support valuations

Do Not Ignore Real Earnings

The BLS will also release September Real Earnings at the same time as CPI.

This report shows how wages are performing after adjusting for inflation.

In August, real average hourly earnings fell 0.1% because consumer prices rose faster than nominal hourly wages.

Another decline would suggest that higher prices are continuing to squeeze consumer purchasing power.

💵 Dollar Index: DXY Pulls Back Ahead of CPI

DXY trades near 102.1–102.2 in the early session.

The index reached roughly 102.6 on Monday, its strongest level in around 18 months, before retreating as Treasury yields eased and traders reduced positions ahead of CPI.

  • Support: 102.00
  • Secondary Support: 101.80
  • Resistance: 102.40
  • Major Resistance: 102.60
  • Breakout Target: 103.00

DXY CPI Trigger

A strong core CPI surprise could bring Monday’s 102.60 high back into focus quickly. A softer core number could turn 102.00 into the first important downside liquidity area.

🇪🇺 EUR/USD Reclaims 1.1200 Ahead of CPI

EUR/USD is trading around 1.1200–1.1210 after rebounding from recent lows around 1.1150.

  • Support: 1.1180 / 1.1150
  • Resistance: 1.1220 / 1.1250
  • Major Recovery Level: 1.1300

The pair remains highly sensitive to the Dollar reaction after CPI.

🇬🇧 GBP/USD Tests the Upper Half of Its Recent Range

GBP/USD trades around 1.3250–1.3260.

The pair has spent several weeks largely trapped between approximately 1.3200 and 1.3300.

  • Support: 1.3200 / 1.3150
  • Resistance: 1.3300 / 1.3375

CPI may provide the catalyst needed to break that range.

🇦🇺 AUD/USD Approaches 0.7000

AUD/USD trades near 0.6990.

The Australian Dollar is receiving some support from improving Chinese inflation data and the recent pullback in the US Dollar.

  • Support: 0.6960 / 0.6930
  • Resistance: 0.7000 / 0.7030

🇳🇿 NZD/USD Recovers Toward 0.5620

NZD/USD has recovered toward the 0.5620 region.

  • Support: 0.5600 / 0.5580
  • Resistance: 0.5635 / 0.5660

The pair remains sensitive to both CPI and broader global risk sentiment.

🇯🇵 USD/JPY Holds Near 158.50

USD/JPY remains around the mid-158 area.

The pair is particularly sensitive to Treasury yields.

  • Support: 158.00 / 157.50
  • Resistance: 158.80 / 159.00
  • Major Psychological Level: 160.00

A hot CPI print could quickly revive upward pressure, while a decline in yields could strengthen the Yen.

🇨🇦 USD/CAD Slips Toward 1.4200

USD/CAD trades around 1.4200 as higher Oil prices provide support to the Canadian Dollar.

  • Support: 1.4170 / 1.4140
  • Resistance: 1.4230 / 1.4270

The pair could experience a sharp two-way reaction because both US CPI and Oil prices are major drivers today.

🇨🇭 USD/CHF Remains Near 0.8330

  • Support: 0.8300 / 0.8270
  • Resistance: 0.8350 / 0.8380

The Swiss Franc could also attract safe-haven demand if CPI triggers broader risk aversion.

🥇 Gold Tests $4,150 Ahead of CPI

Gold is trading around $4,150–$4,160 after extending its recent pullback.

The CPI reaction for Gold is more complicated than simply saying higher inflation is bullish.

Hot inflation can increase demand for Gold as an inflation hedge.

But if hotter CPI causes Treasury yields and the Dollar to surge, the immediate market reaction can be bearish for bullion.

Gold CPI Reaction Map

Hot core CPI + yields higher: Negative initial setup for Gold.

Soft CPI + yields lower: Bullish Gold setup.

Hot headline + soft core: Expect volatility and possible whipsaw.

  • Support: $4,150
  • Major Support: $4,100
  • Lower Liquidity: $4,075
  • Resistance: $4,180 / $4,200
  • Major Resistance: $4,250

₿ Bitcoin Stabilizes Above $83K

Bitcoin is trading around $83,000–$84,000 after recovering from Monday’s weakness.

BTC remains particularly sensitive to liquidity expectations and Treasury yields.

  • Support: $82K / $80K
  • Resistance: $84.5K / $87K

A softer CPI report could improve the liquidity outlook and support crypto.

A strong inflation surprise could produce the opposite reaction.

🛢️ Oil Near $95 Adds Another Inflation Risk

WTI crude has climbed toward the $95 region.

Oil is especially important today because energy is one of the reasons economists expect headline CPI to rise sharply.

  • Support: $93.50 / $92.00
  • Resistance: $95.50 / $97.00

📈 US Stocks Wait for CPI Direction

Wall Street ended Tuesday slightly lower as investors digested earnings and reduced risk ahead of CPI.

  • S&P 500: 7,805.45, down 0.02%
  • Dow Jones: 51,670.10, down 0.35%
  • Nasdaq Composite: 27,204.38, down 0.15%
  • Nasdaq 100: around 30,569

Technology stocks remain particularly exposed to Treasury yields.

A hot core CPI reading could push yields higher and pressure high-duration technology valuations.

A softer report could produce the opposite reaction.

Final Market Outlook

Today’s CPI report comes at an unusually complicated point for US monetary policy.

Inflation is expected to accelerate sharply at the headline level.

Oil and other energy costs remain elevated.

But core monthly inflation is expected to moderate.

Meanwhile, September payroll growth slowed to just 29,000.

The Fed therefore faces a difficult trade-off.

Tightening too aggressively could put additional pressure on an already slowing labour market.

But ignoring persistent inflation could allow higher prices and inflation expectations to become more deeply embedded.

That is why today’s core CPI number deserves particular attention.

A hot headline alone may not be enough to create a sustained Dollar rally if core inflation remains contained.

But a simultaneous upside surprise in headline and core CPI could quickly change expectations for rates, Treasury yields and global risk assets.

🎯 TraderFactor Bottom Line

The market already expects headline CPI to be hot.

The bigger question is whether underlying inflation is also accelerating.

Watch core CPI, Treasury yields and DXY together before drawing conclusions from the first price move.

Do not trade the headline. Trade the confirmed market reaction.

US CPI FAQ

What time is US CPI today?

The September US CPI report is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

What is the CPI forecast?

Headline CPI is expected around 0.6% month-on-month and 3.6% year-on-year. Core CPI is expected around 0.2% monthly and 2.5% annually.

Why could headline CPI rise so sharply?

Energy prices have increased substantially, meaning gasoline and transportation-related costs could contribute heavily to the headline number.

Why is core CPI important?

Core CPI removes food and energy and can provide a cleaner view of persistent inflation. A stronger-than-expected core reading would be more concerning for the Federal Reserve.

What could hot CPI do to Gold?

If hot CPI pushes Treasury yields and the Dollar sharply higher, Gold could face initial selling pressure. If inflation rises while yields fail to follow, the Gold reaction could be very different.

What comes after CPI?

The Fed Beige Book arrives later today. Thursday brings PPI, Retail Sales and Jobless Claims, providing additional information on inflation, demand and the labour market.
